Where the work's taking place
The work will take place across the southern portion of the project - from the end of the M1 Motorway in the south to the Hunter Regional Botanic Gardens in the north. It will be carried out on existing main and local roads, footpaths, verge and some private property. In some cases we may need to travel across private property to access the project site. If this is the case, we will contact affected landowners directly. |
What's happening
The Black Hill to Tomago project team is finalising detailed design for the new road which includes 10 kilometres of dual carriageway, interchanges at Black Hill, Tarro and Tomago and a 2.6-kilometre bridge over the Hunter River and floodplain. To inform the design, the project team will be undertaking early investigations to locate underground services such as water and electricity and determine soil conditions. This work will begin in late March and continue until the start of major construction later this year. This work will involve drilling more than 100 “potholes” and using ground-penetrating radar to locate services. We will also take more than 500 ground samples using drill rigs and excavators to dig boreholes and test pits. |
Equipment and impacts
The work will require vacuum trucks, drill rigs, ground penetrating radar, survey equipment, construction vehicles, traffic control and handheld machinery. There will be minimal impact on nearby residents. You may notice vehicles and machinery accessing the sites and immediate neighbours may hear some noise from the vacuum truck, drill rigs and handheld machinery. We will make every effort to minimise these impacts by turning off machinery and vehicles when not in use. Noise levels will be quiet. Directly affected residents will be contacted and advised of the likely impact and what we are doing to minimise disruption during the work. There will be speed reductions and short stoppages while we perform this work. All work will be managed under traffic control, and we ask motorists to allow extra travel time, follow all directions of traffic controllers and be patient. For the latest traffic updates, you can call 132 701, visit livetraffic.com or check the Live Traffic App. |
Looking ahead
Some work will need to be completed outside of standard construction hours to minimise impacts to highway traffic and ensure the safety of our personnel and motorists. There will be some out of hours work along the existing Pacific Highway during the next three months, including: • Potholing and geotechnical investigations along the existing M1, John Renshaw Drive, Pacific Highway and New England Highway between April and June • Installation of project signage and barriers between July and August. Additional out of hours work may be required due to wet weather or unforeseen circumstances. Transport will provide written notification before the work starts. Directly impacted residents will be contacted and advised of the likely impact and how we will minimise disruption during work. |
